The Inconvenient Truth About Network Marketing Businesses
Being a network marketer doesn’t mean you have a real business for the following reasons:
1- You don’t own the company
2- You don’t own the products the company makes
3- Your affiliate/IBO account can be yanked away from you at any time
4- Your primary program could change it’s compensation plan rules at any time
5- You’re really just a performance-based salesperson/spokeperson for the company itself.
What if your IBO affiliate account gets disabled all of a sudden?
Let’s say that the company you’re promoting all of a sudden dictates that you need to put special banners on your websites declaring your site an Official IBO Independent Distributor with a special banner or badge…
That takes away from the control you have on even your own websites. Displaying those badges and banners is legal protection for the company but is also a way for your website to convert less effectively because the visitors to your site instantly know what you’re all about and what you’re selling.
Also, sometimes network marketing companies, in order to protect themselves legally, won’t allow you to get domain names with the name of the company anywhere in the domain name. This legal protection is necessary in some cases because some affiliates will make wild claims and erroneous content just to get some sales and signups.
Creation of misconstrued perceptions can negatively affect the brand and image of the network marketing program being touted, and that’s why some companies pull the plug on their affiliates and their websites on a moment’s notice; to protect the company itself from any legal actions stemming from well-intentioned IBO and affiliates.
What if the company changes its product in such a way that makes distributors unhappy?
In the health and wellness network marketing industry, this is usually what makes people believers and users of th eproducts, so if sudden changes to the product quality are made, you have no control over these changfes that could affect your retention rate for enrollees.
What if the company changes it’s compensation plan in an undesirable way?
The compensation plan may have been the #1 reason you decided to endorse this company and their product, but if they make a change to this important aspect of the “business”, ten oyu and all your downlines are all affected by this, too.

Of course, Dan, that means that most people are “destined” to fail because of the built-in avoidance of promoting oneself. Coupled with the notion that we each have nothing really worth promoting! This is one of those moments in personal and professional growth when we shift the focus and see an entirely different forest that is made of the millions of affiliate trees we have all signed up for. A paradigm shift.
A wake up call. Thanks for another thought provoking post. Stir up some folks here, it will,I think, hmmm?
